스시산원 경 (광화문) – The third and newest branch of the Sushi Sanwon “group.” It was my first time at any of the Sushi Sanwon sushi omakase restaurants.
The original one is at Seolleung Station (dinner omakase @W150,000) – 14 sushi counter seats and 1 room. Second location is at Yeoksam (dinner omakase @ W80,000) – 9 sushi counter seats and one room.
This location in Gwangwhamun is less than a year old. It has 12 sushi counter seats. Dinner omakase is W80,000. It is located in the B1 level of an office building. When you enter the B1 level, it has the feel of bunch of different kimbab shops, chicken restaurants, bars and then this hidden oasis. Absolutely total different vibe once you enter this restaurant.
I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the dining experience. For W80,000, I would say it is absolutely worth a visit. Initial gut reaction is that this is Top 10 caliber out of the 26 Japanese omakase restaurants under W90,000 that I have identified.
After the round of sushi is finished, the sushi chef will ask you which additional one piece did you want to eat agin. For me, it was the seaweed laver with rice, raw shrimp and uni (sea urchin). It was decadent. Pure decadence.
