I have been to Carnivore Gastropub twice now and for an omnivore with a carnivore bias this place doesn’t disappoint. The menu provides various Western style dishes. We started with the ragu bruschetta. True to their name, the ragu bruschetta was loaded with ground beef. It was on a large single piece of artisanal bread that was chewy and it came with a side of string fries. It was different than any bruschetta I have had in the past. More like a hardy bolognese sauce, rather than your usual bruschetta toppings. All said it was very tasty. We then had the lamb chop dish that comes with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. This is solid, like any of the meats dishes at Carnivore, the lamb was cooked to perfect temperature. I could of eaten more of it, next time I will not be sharing. The fish & chips provides a good value that will fill you up. The flaky fish melts in your mouth. Though the shoestring fries are a little flimsy in the presence of the fish. My personal preference would be a steak fries with more seasoning. Finally, we moved on to the chicken & waffles. The chicken was crispy and moist complemented by the sweetness of the waffle and maple syrup. A respectable delivery of the Southern American dish.
They have a broad choices of great micro brewed beers, to include everything from stouts to sours. And they make a few choice cocktails very well. I had the gin and tonic. The house gin is Tanqueray. It comes perfectly balanced with a cucumber slice and a lemon twist. I found the cucumber & lemon very refreshing.
The staff is friendly and welcoming. The owner speaks fluent English having lived in South Africa. It is clear that this is a neighborhood favorite for locals and expats alike. I think most of the people frequent the place for drinks. But as a meat eater, the food is flawless. As an omnivore, I think Carnivore could benefit from larger helpings on some of the side dishes and replace the string fries with steak fries.
